Vast Ocean of Light
7:30 pm, Sat 18 May 2019
St Pancras Parish Church
To celebrate Jonathan Dove’s 60th birthday a programme comprising recent and unrecorded works, alongside two of the composers mainstays: In Beauty May I Walk and The Passing of the Year.
The Passing of the Year is a song cycle for double choir and piano in seven movements of seasonally-themed texts by poets including Blake, Tennyson and Dickinson.
The concert title takes its name from the motet Vast Ocean of Light which features Dove’s trademark ostinato, ‘glistening’ organ part. Both this and the concert opener, They Shall Rise were first performed at Westminster Abbey.
Completing the programme, are two secular works: a setting of Thomas Hardy’s The Darkling Thrush, and Two Sonnets with settings of Full Many a Glorious Morning by William Shakespeare and Care-charmer Sleep by Samuel Daniel.
