Signing to Delphian for debut CD release 2017

We are delighted to be able to formally announce our signing to the Delphian Record label, who will release our debut CD in 2017.

Recording takes place in late October of this year.

The choir has chosen to record a complete disc of music by Bristol-based  David Bednall, a composer with whom we’ve collaborated several times across our short history. His Easter Alleluia even featured at our debut recital and can be heard below.

Direct and emotional rapport

Says David: “I’m very excited about this project and the opportunity to have my music performed and recorded by such a vibrant and exciting new group. I have heard Epiphoni perform my music on a number of occasions now, and they have always had a direct and emotional rapport with it, always sounding fully committed to the musical expression necessary. I look forward to working with them and Tim closely on this project.”

Songs of love

The disc will include the Three Songs of Love composed for The Exultate Singers (with whom Epiphoni share many historic links – as well as ongoing exchange of membership!) and premiered on Valentine’s Day 2015. Epiphoni performed one movement from the set, The Cloths of Heaven (text by Yeats), at the 2015 London Festival of Contemporary Church Music.

40-part premiere

The disc will feature a number premiere recordings, amongst them David’s 40-part motet, Lux Orta est Iusto — a ravishing depiction of luminosity. Epiphoni gave the third performance earlier this year, at St Martin-in-the-Fields as part of the Brandenburg Choral Festival, to a packed church, and it stole the show.

The concert was filmed and posted on YouTube, so for the curious, here’s a preview of how Lux Orta sounds (and looks)!

David studied music at The Queen’s College, Oxford where he was also Organ Scholar, and went on to hold Assistant Organist posts at Gloucester, Wells and Bristol Cathedrals and completed a PhD in Composition at the University of Bristol. Epiphoni’s recording project follows in the footsteps of all those fine institutions, all of whom have recorded his works, many to critical acclaim.  Those recordings, and more, are available via David’s website: http://www.davidbednall.com/recordings.html
